When China travel apps fail

Many common travel problems happen at the last mile. A plan that worked in one city may fail in the next, so carry a small, practical fallback for each step.

City-level fallbacks for metro QR codes, map searches, ride-hailing pins and Chinese-only booking flows.

Metro QR code declined

Check whether that city’s transport QR is enabled in Alipay, WeChat or a local transit app.
Try the station ticket machine or staffed counter if the wallet card is unavailable for transit.
Carry a small amount of cash and confirm whether bank-card tap is accepted at that station.

Map cannot find the hotel

Search the hotel’s Chinese name and paste the Chinese street address into your map or ride-hailing app.
Compare the map pin with the booking confirmation and ask the hotel for its preferred pickup entrance.
Save a screenshot before leaving Wi-Fi; English brand names can resolve to a different branch or no result.

A Chinese-only mini-program blocks a booking

Check the venue’s official English page first. If the mini-program requires a local phone number or identity type you do not have, contact the venue or compare a reputable reseller. Keep an alternative date or nearby attraction.
